While COVID continues to hang around, flu season is in the rearview mirror as October approaches. The flu generally peaks between December and February. The CDC says it takes about two weeks after vaccination for flu antibodies to develop in the body. Timing is everything when scheduling your influenza vaccine … and your COVID shots and boosters.
The CDC says most people need one dose of flu vaccine for the season. Receiving this dose now and into October is recommended as a good time to get the flu vaccine.
The CDC has some new guidelines for seniors. It does not recommend any particular flu vaccine for people younger than age 65. It does have preferential vaccines for those ages 65 and older, and that’s new this year.
For those 65 years and older, there are three preferred and recommended flu vaccines above the standard-dose flu vaccines. Information on these vaccines is on the CDC website (CDC.gov).
Continue to wear a mask and socially distance yourself in large groups. Wash hands often. Stay safe everyone!
