You may have heard Monday that Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson continue to develop revised COVID vaccine booster shots targeting Omicron, which continues to spread rapidly worldwide.
The current COVID boosters available in the U.S. — the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA formulas and the Johnson & Johnson adenovirus version — target only the original form of the virus first identified in China in 2019.
Research shows those shots still provide adequate protection against the new, super contagious strain, especially against severe disease, hospitalization, and death. The drugmakers said they will continue to work on variant-specific boosters in case they are needed, according to an NBC report.
Today Ohio reported nearly 19,697 new COVID cases. Except for a handful of days, the number of new cases has remained above 19,000 since late December. Our infectious disease physician said COVID cases at Marymount Hospital and in the Cleveland Clinic system have declined significantly. Only a handful of people being swabbed in the ER are positive. Hopefully, this news indicates Omicron is beginning to peak! The local news is also reporting that cases in Northeast Ohio are dropping and cases in other parts of Ohio are rising.
I’d like to Shout Out the dedication of Scott Booth of our maintenance team. Yesterday Scott worked to get our COVID area ready for new admissions. He keeps the floors throughout the facility polished, and he even picked up a co-worker who needed a ride to work. It’s no wonder Scott is a former Franciscan Spirit Award winner.
Please continue to practice the Three Ws – wear a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance. Stay safe everyone!
