COVID Unit Reopens After Four Residents Test Positive

Just when it looked like we were starting to turn the corner on the coronavirus we had a slight setback Sunday. We had four new positive resident cases on Villa St. Joseph’s first floor SCU. The day began with a symptomatic resident. When staff began outbreak testing, three more residents tested positive.

All are showing no or minor symptoms and we are carefully monitoring all residents on the unit. Except for compassionate care visits, we are suspending all visits on SCU until further notice. We also reopened our COVID unit.

We tested several staff members working Sunday. We tested all staff on Monday and will do so again today. I commend our staff for doing a thorough job helping with testing, disinfecting, and moving residents as needed.

For our COVID update since last March: Villa St. Joseph has one (1) Active Staff Cases and four (4) Active Resident Cases. We have a total of 84 resident and staff cumulative cases at Villa St. Joseph. Marymount Place has no Active Staff Case and no active Resident Cases — and a cumulative total of 11 resident or staff cases.

Sunday’s events serve as a reminder that we must remain on high alert with any changes in resident conditions and vital signs. I cannot stress enough the importance of always wearing proper PPE.

For staff that means wearing the N95 masks on SCU, Clare Hall, and the Rehabilitation Care Unit. Visitors must wear a surgical mask.

Please continue to practice diligence when it comes to wearing a mask, properly washing your hands, and practice social distancing. Now that spring has arrived, it is imperative that we do not let down our guard when it comes to the virus. It is still out there and remains very real.
